Prepping for a Week in the Pool!

I can't believe it's finally January, and in 10 short days I'm heading off to my first ever teaching vacation! In case you missed it, here are the basics about taking a vacation as a Zumba instructor, and here is another post with some details to help you find an opportunity and be prepared for it.

This is what my "studio" will look like for a week!

Not only will I be teaching at a resort that I've never been to, but I'll most likely be teaching Aqua Zumba, which isn't my regular format. I went for training over the summer specifically so I would be ready to rock on my teaching vacation.

A few things I'm doing to get ready:

1. Re-choreographing my songs: In Aqua Zumba, the moves are bigger and slower. They have to be, since everyone's in the pool!

2. Packing like it's a competitive sport: I have to bring a full slate of athletic clothes to teach in, along with everything else needed for a week at a resort. I'm determined to get it all in one suitcase, sneakers and all!

3. Visualizing: It sounds cheesy, but I'm picturing myself teaching in the sun on the pool deck. I know there will be a lot of distractions, but I want to "practice" teaching in that environment as much as possible before I even get there.

4. Getting subs for my classes: I'll miss three of my regular classes while I'm gone, which I always feel badly about. I spent a bunch of time finding and confirming subs, hoping everything goes well.

If you have advice for me, please leave a comment!

  1. Jennifer! I can't wait to hear how everything goes! Have a great time! I was in Cancun in October and taught a 90 minute class outside in the 93 degree heat. I made sure to grab some water in between every song but I had no idea how wiped out I would be the next day. It literally took me all day to recover. I obviously did not hydrate enough the days prior and probably had too many "cocktails" the day before I taught. Lesson learned. Next time I'll be sure to drink water like it's my job the entire week prior to teaching outdoors and in a climate that I am not used to. I am used to teaching 5 classes a week (and I take 3 classes a week) but all indoors in the nice air conditioned studios. I had no idea how spoiled I was :)
    Have a great time!
